Yesterday, I was looking at my access logs (using webalizer) and found out that there are many hits from people who are searching for a sinhala font for google.lk. Google Sri Lanka is based sinhala Unicode fonts. For windows users, fonts can be downloaded from www.fonts.lk; Last year, it wasn’t fully supported – ‘rakaransaya’ and ‘yansaya’ didn’t render properly in firefox. I wonder whether they have made any progress since then. For linux users, get fonts from www.linux.lk. The sinhala support was debianized, so, if you are in debian environment, just a matter of adding the repositories and using apt-get or synaptic. It works really nicely.

The main reason that Google.lk or any Google features available in Sinhala are not seen properly is: Sinhala fonts are created for UTF-8 Unicode format. This may be the reason the representation of the Sound system like “æ” which is not available in other Indo-Aryan and Dravidan Language groups.
Example:
(Hindi/Tamil)
Lats look at the Unicode structure of Hindi/Tamil referred by http://www.unicode.org
अ /அ is represented by a
आ /ஆis represented by aa or A
But in Sinhala another sound “æ” couldn’t be represented by this universal format.
Therefore this effects the visibility in the browsers.
If Unicode used in one website there is no need to use a font.If we are using a font means then it is like using True fonts. Then how the search engine maps exactly the keyword that you search?
In Vista a font is used called “IskollaPotha”.
This works only for Vista and IE browsers for Vista only. There you can see Google.lk in Sinhala.
The font is installed with the OS itself.
But this is not the correct solution.
Lets learn more and try to provide solution for this problem.

Amal,
I think you might have mis-understood the situation. If you go to fonts.lk, you’ll be able to see sinhala packages for almost every system.
The Microsoft font renderer in XP doesn’t work properly, so you’ll have to patch it. The packages in fonts.lk will do it for you.
That’s the reason sinhala is not displayed properly in Windows system. If you get a Linux based system, the sinhala fonts are rendered perfectly. Unfortunately, Windows being closed source and depending on their release cycles, people had to wait for 3/4 more years to get the rendering working properly. Even then, If it’s not working on Firefox, you’ll have to wait till another 3/4 years for the next release.
